How Many Rounds Fired Before Cleaning C308 Rifle

  1. I'm just curious how many rounds you will put through a burglarize earlier cleaning.

I'yard shooting a Kimber 84M, in .308 Win. It's a deer rifle for sure, and information technology can grouping .five moa off of bags. How many rounds would you put through a hunting rifle before cleaning the barrel with either a powder solvent OR copper solvent?

  2. I don't clean such rifles till the accuracy starts to fall off

Sometimes this may be a few hundred rounds later some guns only a couple boxes of ammo

But as a hunting burglarize if it gets wet or damp it gets cleaned

  3. I agree with krochus. Sometimes cleaning is more harmful than fouling.

    RMD

  4. Unless you lot're using surplus rifles with corrosive ammo honestly I wouldn't impact the bore too often. My brother just used brownish bear vii.26x54r in his mosin and we looked at the bore subsequently xl rounds, clean as a whistle...now my mauser using corrosive ammo for some reason the bore looked like I just shoved dirt in information technology. BTW, his mosin was shooting crawly. 50yrds, standing up, iron sights, top left corner of a ii inch orange dot..about 3 rounds in the same spot. not bad
  5. Maybe cleaning with bronze brushes would exist harmful over fourth dimension, only nylon brushes are pretty gentle every bit nylon should, theoretically, non harm a bore. I clean after 15 shots or so with gunslick foam and hoppes elite especially if Im using all copper ammo. So prolix and dry patch it. Then I put two fouling shots through it. If Im using hornady GMX or other all copper bullets it fouls more than and so if I apply hornady interlocks. I employ nylon brush maybe every twoscore shots and since I use my rifles for hunting, takes me a twelvemonth or two. And its a gentle ane or two strokes. I recommend a bore guide.
  6. y'all can't just wait downwards the bore (without a proper borescope) and tell if it's dirty or not... carbon deposits get laid into the barrel along with copper that is invisible without a scope.

The longer it sits in that location the harder information technology is to get out.... most guys never get it all out because they don't know how to clean a barrel properly anyhow.

Having said that, most rifles shoot best with a few fouling shots down the bore. All of my benchrest rifles need 3-iv fouling shots after cleaning to get them "settled" in before shooting for record. Just these rifles get cleaned between every cord because accuracy DOES kickoff to fall off at near 20rds. Not enough for a hunter to worry about simply decease for a benchrest shooter.

I clean my hunting rifles at the range with the bore still warm at to the lowest degree every 20rds. Subsequently I'm washed practicing, working up loads etc IF that burglarize is going to be headed to the hunting grounds I put iii-4 shots through it at the end of the session and put it back in the case.

I've cleaned enough of "clean" rifles that a customer or buddy is complaining nigh accuracy falling off on only to discover them filthy with burn down/caked on carbon and copper deposits. Some have been so fouled that it took the ameliorate part of a day to get them make clean. And these guys "make clean" their rifles regularly. Merely not correctly.

You may think that accurateness hasn't fallen off after 50 or and so shots but your thinking is mis-guided unless you lot're shooting a very worn out bore to begin with.... in that case the fouling may be tightening information technology upwardly a flake..... I've seen some old surplus rifles that shot cadet shot patterns until they were well fouled. Then they were only bad groups....LOL

  7. Cleaning after every 20 rounds is such overkill IMO.
  8. After hunting season unless it gets wet.

During the Jump and Summertime I tend to spend a lot of fourth dimension at the range practicing and playing around with unlike loads. During this time I'll make clean information technology once a month or so since information technology is being shot a lot

Once I become everything set where I want it, I make clean it upwards real good then brand 1 more range trip to make sure something has non changed earlier hunting flavor begins. I won't make clean it unless it gets wet once more until after the season ends. Which is pretty long here in GA. about iii 1/2 months. If I have to remove the action from the stock I'll not hunt with that burglarize until I've re-checked the zero at the range. I'll use another rifle until then.

  9. ill use a diameter snake later on a day at the range and give the gun a skillful cleaning after a few hundred rounds,

my carry gun i clean information technology subsequently every range day or once a month give information technology a skilful looking over,
trap gun (bore serpent) after a 24-hour interval of trap and a wipe down

a 22 might clean it skilful after a few thousand rounds
(that could exist days to months simply depends)

  10. I clean the bore after every range trip regardless of number of rounds fired.
  11. How can it be overkill if your not using a harsh diameter brush every time? A "liquid" cleaning with merely solvents is not going to degrade the bore in my opinion, and a dry patch wont hurt the bore. And assuming it does not harm the bore, and the gun shoots ameliorate when its pretty clean with 2-3 shots through it rather than after 30 shots have been through it uncleaned, and so I recollect I owe it to the animal to brand certain my burglarize is shooting every bit good as possible. Depending on the ammo you use, the diameter of the bore does brainstorm to change equally it gets fouled upwards and accurateness will suffer in my opinion. At present if yous mean over impale in the sense of information technology takes time out of your day to clean the rifle and then I would say I have no life, lol, and and then taking 30 minutes to clean my rifle every 20 shots or so is ok. To each his own.
  12. I am worried nigh rust. So I will always employ a solvent to deliquesce the pulverization particles when I come back from the range.

I run a copper bristle castor down the tube, information technology saturated in GI diameter cleaner. GI diameter cleaner is not a copper solvent then it does not eat upward the bristles. When I run out of GI bore cleaner I will mix upwardly Ed'due south Cherry.

I wipe all the solvent out and button an oily patch and the barrel is good for storage for months.

As long as I use a bore guide, I am not going to add any article of clothing to the throat or muzzle.

I am not going to use JB again until the barrel starts losing accurateness. That stuff is an annoying and should only be used sparingly.

A young man shooter was telling me he used JB ever 1000 rounds. He has 5000 rounds on his M1a friction match barrel and it will nonetheless hold the x ring at 600 yards.

  13. Become to a demote residue match sometime.... JB is used past nigh shooters betwixt relays.... you could likely start patching JB downwardly your diameter today and not stop until the die you lot died and non affect the diameter...... information technology'd be really clean though. Patently I'm kidding..

It's a very, very mild abrasive that I've used for many years. Every time I make clean bore information technology gets JB pushed through it.

Rarely. If you ain't using corrosive primers or blackpowder, at that place is simply no reason (other than erstwhile habits and brainwashing) to clean any sporting gun every time y'all shoot information technology.
  15. Agreed. I tin can't even remember the concluding time, if ever, that I ran patches of solvent downwardly the barrels of my .270 rifles, or screwed the brush onto my cleaning rod. Sure, I'll slip a dry BoreSnake through them in one case or twice a year, just to make sure there ain't anything in at that place, but that'due south almost it.
  16. How do you guys who rarely clean your bores prevent rust? Only sheer humidity combined with powder resider can cause this to happen if you lot live in a damp climate. It doesn't require rain or snowfall. When examining bores in gun shops and gun shows, information technology is absolutey amazing how many take pitted bores.

I make clean mine afterwards each shooting session and then run an oily patch down the bore followed by a dry 1. Enough oil remains this style to prevent rust but non seriously effect the next shot. Many times this is not an involved, detailed process involving harsh solvents and brushes, but only a quick procedure to prevent that dreaded rust. Now, if you live in dry Arizona or Wyoming, this may be an unnecessary worry.

I've never worried about rust, nor has it ever been an consequence. Specially with guns that see mostly cast bullets. I lived in Florida for 32yrs and never had an issue with rust.

Pitted bores are usually from blackpowder or corrosive primers.

  18. at the very least, I pull a boresnake through afterward each twenty-four hours of shooting. I avert rod-cleaning because the muzzle entry has me concerned nearly crown impairment. Afterward 100rds I like to use a balmy smoothen like JB. Afterwards polishing the groups are tighter
  19. Probably the same guys that when selling a burglarize annunciate it as "well maintained"....

Also why I never purchase a used rifle without running a bore scope down the tube... you'd be amazed at the BS coming out of sellers mouths.... "yeah it'south had less than a box shot through it" and in that location'south plenty copper in the diameter to set up a pocket-size mining operation...

years ago before I knew any improve I'd only put a bore light in i end and take a peek.... yous really can see much and if a guy ran a oily patch downwardly the diameter it'll look all overnice and shiny... only to go them habitation and later a good cleaning detect all the pits and fire cracked throat....

If you've never gotten it clean you accept no idea whether information technology'southward pitted or not. but then again if yous don't care it really doesn't affair.

I intendance too much about my equipment than to corruption it.

  20. Make clean them as soon as I come off of the range, or from the field subsequently hunting...Regardless of whether I fired a round or not.

I also have a PM schedule that I utilize at home to wipe down everything in storage, and check the bores in between range sessions.

I practise not want any nasty surprises...

Equally exercise I and what is normal "maintenance" to ane is abuse to another.
  22. Reference mail service #8 above. I accept rifles I've owned 35 years that have been cleaned the same way since new. Nonetheless one/2 MOA and no rust. If you enjoy cleaning your rifles so have at it. As long every bit it is done carefully it won't injure. But I've seen more rifles ruined by improper cleaning than fail.
  23. Clean and light oil once a year for storage. Dry patch before shooting at the range. Make clean once more after a longish range session(southward) - say l round or so. KG-12 if there is any copper. Bronze brush on all "new" to me guns. Lots of lite shining and looking. Not plenty money for a diameter scope (yet) :(

Nosotros cleaned in the Ground forces. Not sure if it was something to do, or a style to continue us all familiar with our Mattel rifles? Our sixteen'due south had chrome bores, and we however cleaned them?

  24. Im with Ronsch here. If my weapon left the house, information technology gets cleaned when information technology comes back in the house. Call it brainwashing, waste of time, whatever. I accept never had a pitted diameter or rust issue from whatever of my weapons so that tells me I am doing something correct. Before I take one on a chase, I will generally burn a couple of fouling shots on a couple of them (old .303 and an old K98 Mauser 8mm) because they are the original barrels and while still in actually expert shape rifling wise, they shoot better after 2 fouling shots.
  25. I never clean until accuracy starts to fall off. I just depends on the rifle. Rust has never been a problem even with our humidity in fl.
